The overload relay protects the jockey pump motor from sustained overcurrent: if the motor draws more than the dial-set amperage, the relay trips and disconnects the starter circuit before the windings overheat.

Common signs of a failed overload assembly include a jockey pump that will not start, nuisance tripping even at the correct dial setting, or a controller that energizes but never engages the motor. When installing, set the adjustment dial to the full load amps (FLA) shown on the jockey pump motor nameplate, per the Tornatech installation manual.
